HIERON: Network for the Study of Greek Sanctuaries

Home Page

Members of Hieron investigate Greek sanctuaries from the Early Iron Age until Late Antiquity. Geographically, our network covers all areas inhabited or impacted by Greeks in the Aegean and beyond along the coasts of the Mediterranean and the Pontus. Our approach is transdisciplinary, including the archaeological evidence, archaeozoology, archaeobotany, literary sources, epigraphy as well as ancient images of cult and sanctuaries. We study Greek sanctuaries in their cultural context and are especially interested in the interaction with non-Greeks.
